It was digestive problems that first got me interested in nutrition, over 30 years ago. I was overweight, tired, continually bloated, belching ( and worse) on a daily basis and thought I’d never be able to wear tight clothing again. My face was covered in acne and I was clinically depressed.

The only thing that seemed to help was when I stopped eating completely! Every time I put anything in my mouth my stomach would start to swell until I looked 6 months pregnant. In those days digestive issues just were not taken that seriously. Thankfully we have come a long way since then. The microbiome is big news; we have access to a myriad of different tests, and we know far more about how to treat even the most persistent problems with foods, supplements and lifestyle suggestions. It constantly amazes me how much pain and discomfort people put up with in their daily lives. A good functioning digestive system can affect your moods, energy levels, sleep and immunity. So it's worth sorting it out.

Constantly bloated whatever you eat?

Bloating is definitely the most common symptom that accompanies all digestive health problems. From mild discomfort to debilitating daily pain, it can stop us eating what we like, wearing what we want, or even going out to meet friends.

Bloating is one of the first signs that something is wrong with the digestive system. There can be many underlying causes. Food intolerances, an upset microbiome, too little stomach acid, yeast overgrowth or perhaps more serious issues such as parasites, SIBO and inflammatory conditions.

We may suggest a stool test to see what’s really going on. If we find something interesting, we’ll probably prescribe some dietary changes and supplements to help you restore you back to flat.

Sorting out the gut can take time. Programmes will often be intensive, and last 3 to 6 months.

Reflux keeping you up at night?

Another common problem. The usual answer is to give people antacids or PPIs. But this can often cause more problems by changing the pH, or chemical balance throughout the digestive system. More and more we now realise that too much acid is not actually the problem.

Again, there can always be many underlying reasons behind all digestive issues. Histamine intolerance, stress or anxiety, a hiatus hernia, or being overweight can all cause acid reflux.

Most people have already worked out that certain foods affect them by the time they come to see us. It’s often spicy foods, or coffee, alcohol and chocolate that are the culprits. But together, we will give you the nutritional programme that works best for you.
